You have an important presentation. You know the exact numbers.
You have prepared. You know what you want to say.
And then the spotlight hits you.
You do not even have to be on a stage in front of hundreds of people.
The spotlight can switch on in a team meeting when everyone suddenly turns to you. In a negotiation when an unexpected question arrives. Or one-on-one, when you have to present a product to a client and win them over.
And suddenly everything is different.
Your heart speeds up. Focus becomes harder. You cannot recall the figure you knew perfectly a minute ago. The answer to a simple question arrives on your way out of the room.
Why?
Neuroscience offers an answer.
And its practical use sits behind a large part of my Speaker Coaching, Language Coaching, NeuroCoaching and NeuroManagement.
What is neuroscience — in simple terms?
Neuroscience studies how the brain and the nervous system work — how we think, develop, remember, respond to stress, build habits, make decisions and communicate.
You do not need to know the names of individual brain regions.
What matters is understanding that the way your brain works shapes your everyday life, for example:
- how you handle stress,
- how you present,
- how quickly you recall the information you need,
- how you make decisions,
- how you communicate with people,
- how you use a foreign language under pressure,
- how you react to criticism,
- how you build new habits,
- and whether you merely know something, or can actually use it in practice.
And that last point is the decisive one.
Knowing is not enough.
Why do you suddenly forget what you know well?
Let us go back into the spotlight.
At that moment your brain has to manage several things at once.
You need to recall information, read other people's reactions, form your next sentence, analyse a question, decide how to answer and, if needed, improvise.
For that you need, among other things, working memory and an efficiently functioning prefrontal cortex. It plays a key role in attention, decision-making, cognitive control and other higher cognitive functions.
And then stress arrives.
Stress impairs the functioning of the prefrontal cortex and working memory, and limits our ability to work with information flexibly. Under strong acute stress, the control of behaviour shifts from deliberate, flexible processing towards faster and more reflexive reactions.
In other words:
The more mental capacity stress consumes, the less capacity is left for exactly what you expect of yourself in that moment.
Stress reduces working memory and cognitive flexibility — the ability to work analytically with information, change strategy and find new responses. Creative problem solving suffers as well.
And that is the paradox of presenting:
„Exactly when you need your brain to perform at its best, it can start working against you.“
“I’m stupid.”
One of my clients arrived with a very simple diagnosis:
„I think I'm just stupid.“
Before the presentation she knew the exact data.
Going through it calmly, she knew what she wanted to say.
But during the presentation she started forgetting. And when a question came, sometimes she could not answer even something she would normally know without hesitation.
Her explanation was logical:
„If I know it before the presentation and then cannot answer, I'm probably not cut out for this.“
But her knowledge was not the real problem.
Her brain had started working against her.
The moment stress appeared, part of the mental capacity she needed to recall data, analyse the question and formulate an answer was taken up by nerves and by her stress response.
So we did not train only the presentation.
And certainly not by explaining again what she should say.
We trained her behaviour in the situation where she actually has to use the information.
How did we train it?
First she presented in a calm setting.
Once she handled that, we gradually added more demanding situations.
- Questions.
- Interruptions.
- Unexpected reactions.
- The need to improvise.
- A higher stress load.
But always in a safe space, where a mistake was not a problem but part of the training.
So her brain did not just receive more theory.
It repeatedly practised the required behaviour under progressively harder conditions.
After six months, the situations that used to throw her off stopped shaking her.
And that is exactly the difference between:
- „I know what I should do.“
- „I can do it, even under pressure.“
What is NeuroCoaching?
NeuroCoaching is the approach I use so that we change not only answers, but above all behaviour.
I can explain ten rules of a great presentation.
You can write them down.
You may even be able to list all of them.
But once a client asks you an uncomfortable question, knowing rule number seven will not help you on its own.
That is why NeuroCoaching follows a different principle:
„understanding → practical training → active recall → feedback → repetition → changing conditions → gradually raising the difficulty“
The goal is not simply to pass on information.
The goal is to build new patterns of behaviour, lasting habits and the ability to actually use the response you need.
Repeated active recall supports long-term retention and more flexible use of knowledge across contexts. Research shows that retrieval practice produces better long-term retention than simply re-studying material.
So I do not want to teach you only the right answer.
I train you to use it at the right moment.
How do I use neuroscience in Language Coaching?
I see the same problem with foreign languages.
You may recognise it.
You know the English word perfectly well.
At home you would say it instantly.
Then an important meeting starts.
Someone asks you a question.
And nothing.
Two minutes later, of course, it comes to you.
„Damn. I knew that.“
Yes. You did know it.
The problem is not only what is stored in your memory.
What decides the outcome is whether you can retrieve it quickly and use it in a specific situation.
That is why my Language Coaching is not built only on learning more vocabulary and grammar rules.
We train, for example:
„a meeting → a presentation → questions → a sales conversation → negotiation → small talk → improvisation → an unexpected client reaction“
And we change the context while gradually raising the difficulty.
Memory research shows that active recall strengthens long-term retention and later availability of knowledge. The same principle works when developing a foreign language.
So it is not only about knowing the language.
It is about being able to operate in it when you genuinely need it.
What is NeuroManagement?
The same brain that complicates your presentation obviously comes with you to the office.

That is why neuroscience has practical value in management too.

4 techniques you can try right away
1. Do not train only the content. Train the situation.
Going through your slides ten times is not enough.
Once you can deliver the presentation calmly, ask someone to interrupt you with questions.
Then change the order.
Shorten your time.
Have someone ask a question you do not expect.
Move the training step by step closer to reality.
2. Instead of reading again, close your materials
Finished reading a page?
Close it.
And explain in your own words what it said.
Active recall supports long-term retention and is more effective than simply re-reading.
3. Do not train a perfect script. Train your response.
A real meeting will never follow your script exactly.
A memorised monologue can collapse with the first unexpected question.
So train:
„What will I do if…?“
Not only:
„What exactly will I say?“
4. Increase the stress load gradually
You do not have to start with a presentation to five hundred people.
Start in an environment where you are allowed to make a mistake.
Then add pressure step by step.
The goal is not to remove every trace of nerves. The goal is to be able to perform even when they show up.
Neuroscience is not magic or “brain hacking”
The word neuro sounds attractive today.
And that is exactly why it pays to be careful.
Neuroscience is not mind reading.
It is not a magic button for “reprogramming your brain”.
And a picture of a brain in a slide deck does not make a method scientific.
The practical value of neuroscience lies elsewhere.
It helps us understand how stress, memory, attention, decision-making, development and human behaviour actually work.
And then translate that into practice.
For me the result is a simple principle:
„Less theory. More real change in behaviour.“
